About James

Fifteen years.
One commitment.

I trained as a psychotherapist in 2009, qualifying with a postgraduate diploma from the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy. Over the following fifteen years I have worked with a wide range of people — from those in acute distress to those who are functioning well but sense that something important is missing.

My approach is psychodynamic, which means I'm interested in the unconscious patterns that shape behaviour and relationships — often without our awareness. This isn't quick work, but it tends to produce change that lasts.

I work from a quiet consulting room in Didsbury and also offer sessions online for those who prefer it or cannot travel.

What I work with

Presenting concerns

People come to me with many different difficulties. Below are some of the areas I have particular experience with — though this list is not exhaustive.

Anxiety & chronic worry
Understanding the underlying drivers rather than managing symptoms.
Depression & low mood
Exploring what lies beneath, often something other than what it appears.
Relationship patterns
Why we repeat certain dynamics — and how to begin to change them.
Grief & loss
Not only bereavement, but the loss of identity, relationships, and possibility.
Work & purpose
The feeling that something important is missing, even when things look fine externally.
Identity & self-worth
Who you are beneath the roles you play for other people.
The process

How we begin

01

Initial enquiry

You send a brief message via the form below. I respond within one working day to arrange a short phone call.

02

Telephone consultation

A 20-minute call to hear a little of what's brought you here and answer any questions you have about my approach.

03

Assessment sessions

Two initial sessions to understand your history, your presenting concerns, and what you're hoping to get from the work.

04

Ongoing work

If we agree to proceed, weekly sessions at a regular time. The work is open-ended — we continue for as long as it is useful.
